A morning inside San Francisco City Hall

City Hall is loud in a quiet way. Marble, a rotunda, couples getting married in short windows, and light that does half the work if you let it.

I photograph here a few times a year. People come from the Central Valley, from the peninsula, sometimes just across the street. The building is the same. The hour is never quite the same.

If I can, I like to start before the rotunda fills. The staircase is the obvious frame, and it still works — especially if we slow down on the way up instead of posing at the top and calling it done.

Renita and Jason were easy in the way that matters. We used the stairs, the balcony, and a little walking in between. I directed as little as I could get away with.

You don't need a long timeline. You need a window when the building is kinder, clothes you already like, and someone who will keep you moving when a tour group appears. I work out of Turlock and meet people here often enough that the drive is part of the job, not a special exception.
