Portraits that still feel like you

A good portrait does not need to feel like a performance. It can be direct, quiet, playful, formal, or somewhere in between. The most useful starting point is usually a conversation about where the photograph will live and how you want to feel when you see it.

I am Steven Lelham, a photographer based in Turlock, California. I make portraits with a personal, still-life sensibility: careful attention to light, setting, clothing, objects, and the small details that give a person or family a sense of place.

The photographs can be polished without losing the person in them.

Portrait and headshot sessions

Personal portraits

Personal photographs can mark a change, support a creative project, or simply give you images that feel current. We can work somewhere familiar or choose a setting that brings out a different side of you.

I will give you practical direction as we go—where to stand, what to do with your hands, when to move—while leaving room for expressions and moments that happen naturally.

Family portraits

Family sessions do not have to be perfectly quiet or perfectly posed. I photograph the relationships, energy, and small details that make your family yours, along with the combinations you want to keep.

We can plan for a Turlock or Modesto location, your home, a nearby outdoor setting, or a place that matters to your family. The session will be shaped around the ages, needs, and pace of the people involved.

Professional headshots

A professional headshot should help people recognize and trust you. Whether you need one image for a profile or a set of photographs for your work, I can keep the process straightforward and give you direction that feels clear rather than stiff.

We can make headshots in a workplace, on location, or in another setting that fits your role. Tell me where the images will be used and what you want them to communicate.

A thoughtful, low-pressure process

Start with the purpose

Before we choose a location, we talk about what you need. Is this a family record, an updated portrait, a professional profile image, or something else? That answer helps determine the setting, clothing, timing, and pace.

Work with the setting

Light and place are part of the photograph. I look for simple backgrounds, useful window light, a meaningful landscape, or the details of a workspace. A session can be made close to home or somewhere farther away in California.

Make room for real moments

I will guide you when a little structure helps. I will also watch for the expressions and interactions that cannot be directed into existence. The aim is a collection of images that feels considered but not overworked.

Turlock and Central Valley portrait photography

I am based in Turlock and available in Modesto, Sacramento, and communities throughout the Central Valley. I also travel to the San Francisco Bay Area, Yosemite, and the California coast.

My existing work includes portraits and photographs made in places such as Yosemite, Half Moon Bay, SF City Hall, and Greens on 10th in Modesto. If you have a particular setting in mind, include it in your message.

Session details

Portrait photography is scoped to the session and the work you need. We can talk through the number of people, location, timing, intended use, and the kind of images you are hoping to make. There is no need to decide everything before reaching out.
