Photographing food like a still life

I came to people by way of objects. A board of honey and fruit will tell you how I see a table, a brand, even a wedding — what's in the light, what's left out, where the edge of the frame should be.

Restaurant and brand work is still portrait work, in a way. The food has to feel like itself. If I over-style it, you can tell. If I under-light it, you can tell. The job is to make it look like you already wanted to sit down.

Pizza, a charcuterie tower, a sandwich next to a salad — none of it is fancy for its own sake. I care about the weight of the plate and the space around it. Same eye I use on a staircase at City Hall or a table in Modesto.
